Bavaria, and more particularly Munich, is the spiritual heart of the great German brewing tradition. Munich claims to have more beer drunk per capita in this region than any other region in the world. The Munich Brewers actually started brewing to a purity pledge in 1487, 30 years before Bavaria as a whole adopted the Reinheitsgebot, or purity laws. Only four ingredients are used: malted barley, hops, yeast and water, with no artificial additives. This was universally adopted by brewers throughout Germany in 1906.
