Wychwood

A new Mighty Goliath from Wychwood

Wychwood Brewery of Witney, Oxfordshire, has redesigned the imagery and recipe of its 660ml Ale, Goliath.

Goliath, ‘The Mighty Ale’ is sold exclusively in 660ml format and was the first beer in the UK to opt for this larger ‘sharing’ size. This was in July 2000 and followed Wychwood’s foresight four years earlier, anticipating the growth of bottled ales, which they realised though their flagship brand, Hobgoblin.

As part of an overall review of the entire Wychwood range, Goliath’s recipe has been fine-tuned to make it subtly lighter on the finish whilst keeping the full, rich flavour which has made Goliath Britain’s best-selling 660ml format ale.*

The new recipe Goliath uses finest Maris Otter barley malt blended with a pale crystal malt giving the beer the colour of dark amber. A blend of English and Slovenian Hops give a full, boisterous and eminently drinkable 4.2% abv brew, the highest of all ales in this category.

New artwork has also been commissioned for the bottle, in keeping with the World of Wychwood imagery. The front label has been redesigned to depict Goliath as the hero warrior of the goblin army. Brighter reds and golds give better shelf-standout.

According to Wychwood's Head Brewer, Jeremy Moss:

"Goliath is a brew with deceptive strengths. A delicate floral hop character is complemented by a full, rounded, malty sweetness. A final thrust of spicy bitterness draws this character to a close".
