Brakspear’s Latest Beer Wins Silver Medal
The brewers at Wychwood are celebrating the success of their latest Brakspear brew, after Brakspear Triple took the silver medal in the Strong Beers class at the Brewing Industry International Awards 2005.
Brakspear’s, Head Brewer Jeremy Moss comments:
“By way of celebrating the return of Brakspear brewing to Oxfordshire, we really pushed the boat out to try and create a modern classic brew. We could not have been more pleased with the reception the beer has had from consumers and Beer Journalists alike. Winning this award in such exalted international company is the icing on the cake”.
Brakspear Triple was launched in April 2005. It is a bottle conditioned strong ale (7.2%), which is fermented twice in the famous Brakspear Double-Drop system and once more in the bottle. As well as three fermentations it is also triple hopped. The result is a beer with complex aroma and flavours which remains well balanced.
The combination of high alcohol strength and quality bottle conditioning, means that this beer will mature and change in the bottle. Each bottle is individually numbered, so people interested in storing their bottles for later tasting can find out exactly when the beer was bottled by searching on www.brakspear-beers.co.uk.
Brakspear Triple in 500ml bottles is available in Waitrose and Sainsburys at £1.99.
Editors notes:
1. During a major development of Wychwood’s site in Witney, Oxfordshire, during the Spring of 2004, the Brakspear “Double Drop” Fermenters from the closed Henley Brewery were installed in a dedicated Brakspear fermentation room. The first Oxfordshire brewed Brakspear Bitter went on sale in pubs in July 2004.
2. Brakspear Triple is based on a grist of Maris Otter pale malt and Crystal malts. It’s then hopped three separate times with Northdown and Cascade hops, to give flavour, complexity and freshness. The final hopping takes place when the beer has been “dropped” into the dropping vessel. This blend of hops and malts creates a highly aromatic strong beer, which delivers its rich vinous complexity with flavours akin to rum and Madeira, at 7.2% abv.
3. The International Brewing Awards have been running for 119 years and this year was hosted by DRINKTEC 2005 in Munich - the world's largest exhibition for the beverage industry.
