LAUNCH OF DUCHY ORIGINALS ORGANIC WINTER ALE
Duchy Originals, the organic and natural food brand established by HRH The Prince of Wales in 1992, has launched Duchy Originals Organic Winter Ale (6.2% abv), a partner for its Duchy Originals Organic Ale (5% abv).
Duchy Originals Organic Ale was launched in September 2003 and is now the fastest growing organic beer brand in Britain, with distribution in Waitrose, Booths, Morrisons, Sainsbury’s and selected independent retailers.
Duchy Originals Winter Ale will be exclusive to Waitrose and is looking to add to Duchy Originals success by offering a higher strength winter-time beer incorporating a range of organic cereals, some of which have been grown on The Prince of Wales’s Home Farm at Highgrove. The recipe includes the same organic Plumage Archer barley malt as Duchy Originals Ale, but with the Home Farm’s organic rye and oats added to give complexity and fullness of flavour.
The hop grist is a blend of the organic dwarf hop First Gold, sourced from the Hereford-Worcester border; and organic Target hops grown near Paddock Wood in Kent. The First Gold hop is a variety known for its orange peel and dried apricot flavours and has given a wonderful dried fruit background to the beer.
The combination of these organic ingredients has given Duchy Originals Winter Ale a dark ruby colour and warming toffee flavour, with hints of fruit and spice.
Jeremy Moss, Head Brewer at Wychwood Brewery, Oxfordshire, commented:
“I am very proud to have been asked to brew this seasonal ale for Duchy Originals. Experimenting with new recipes is an important part of a brewer’s life, and it has been a great experience to create in Duchy Originals Winter Ale a new-style old-style brew.”
